Ashok Sukumaran talk

Talk with visiting artist/architect Ashok Sukumaran from Mumbai. September 21st at 630pm at ISIS Arts.Join us tomorrow September 21st at 630pm at ISIS Arts for a talk with visiting artist/architect Ashok Sukumaran.

About the talk:
In his talk, Ashok will discuss recent projects and theoretical approaches, particularly concerns of site-specificity and 'located' media. In a number of recent projects, he has been using electricity as a medium: as a kind of recovery, or 'reboot' of a familiar, pervasive control system. Such reconfigured electricity provides ways for an audience to experience 'digital' concepts of thresholds, virtuality and remote control, and at the same time provides a kind of anticipation of other 'embedded' states to come. The works discussed have other diverse influences, ranging from telegraphy, pre-cinema, 'recombinant' theory, nano- and biotechnology, to issues of legality and property boundaries, and architectures of leakage.

About the artist:
Ashok Sukumaran is a media artist and architect based in Mumbai. He has just completed projects at the ISEA ZeroOne festival in San Jose and the Singapore Biennial. Much of his work takes place outside traditional gallery spaces and the art market and involves interactive public installations; Sukumaran was the first ever artist in residence at Sun Labs, the applied research and advanced development arm of Sun Microsystems, Inc. in California this past year, working with wireless transducers and small programmable object technologies (Sun SPOTS). Sukumaran’s work has received honours internationally, most recently the first prize of the 2005 UNESCO Digital Arts Award, a first prize in the Samsung Art and Design Institute's competition 2002, and a David Bermant Foundation award for media art in 2003.

Refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP to ISIS as space is limited. Tel: 44 191 261 4407 or isis@isisarts.org.uk
